Nostalgia Archive began releasing videos
in the early '90s under the title "The Lost Films of Laurel
and Hardy". While these films were far from lost, it was the
first time that many of them had been released on home
video. These were mostly silent films, each coming one to a
tape. Their quality varied. In addition to VHS cassettes,
they released a total of 8 LaserDiscs in a series called
"Laurel & Hardy and Friends." Most of these discs
contained one or two L&H films, plus other films from
the Roach library. They went out of business in the late
'90s, but most of their VHS videos have been reissued under
the Image Entertainment label (still using the "Lost Films"
title). Image has also resurrected the "Laurel and Hardy and
Friends" series on DVD, although they do not contain the
exact same films as their LaserDisc counterparts. Nostalgia
Archive tapes are no longer available as new, but the
reissued Image Entertainment tapes are readily
available.
